just to correct something, NodeBB will not send a mention unless you are specifically mentioned. We do auto populate a mention in the text box though, so it's probably happening because of that. What we also do is send the message to everybody so everybody has a copy. (Everybody is addressed) e.g. you should not have been mentioned here.

In regular parlance, that's the category/forum that the topic (context) is contained in.
